I am a-g is the artist name of Norwegian-born painter Anne-Grete Pettersen, based between Copenhagen and Madrid.

Her practice is driven by the expressive line. For I am a-g, the line is both a language and a way of thinking — beginning with drawing and often developing into an abstract or figurative work through paint, spray paint, charcoal, pastel, gloss and whatever the work demands.

Her paintings explore the fluid space between the so-called masculine and feminine, identity, human connection and the ways we navigate contemporary life. Rather than offering fixed answers, her work leaves room for ambiguity, movement and personal interpretation.

Pettersen’s background is unusual for an artist. Before becoming a full-time artist, she worked within marketing, technology and privacy, building extensive experience around digital society and the human consequences of an increasingly connected world. This perspective continues to inform her art. Her work often examines themes such as privacy, relationships, technology and human behaviour — translating complex contemporary subjects into something immediate, visual and deeply human.

Her first major solo exhibition, #PrivacyMatters, was presented at the Royal Library’s Black Diamond in Copenhagen in 2024. The exhibition transformed the abstract language of privacy and GDPR into portraits and visual stories, bringing a human face to a subject normally communicated through legislation, technology and policy.

Since then, I am a-g has exhibited internationally, with presentations and exhibitions in Copenhagen, Paris, Madrid, Monaco and Osaka. In 2026, her work was presented at Galerie Knud Grothe in Copenhagen in the group exhibition Women Who Paint Women, and at Madrid Art Show with Lost in Translation.

For I am a-g, context matters. She is interested in the moment when art becomes more than an object — when it enters a space, a conversation, a meal, a book, a business or a social issue, and creates something unexpected between them.

Her work is ultimately about human connection: the things we reveal, the things we protect, and the space between us.
